DescriptionThe principal image of the Main Hall at Minobusan Kuonji, the head temple of Nichiren Shu, presents the world of the Lotus Sutra as a monumental sculptural ensemble. A central jeweled stupa is accompanied by Shaka Nyorai and Taho Nyorai, together with the four Bodhisattvas of the Earth: Superior Practices (Jogyo), Boundless Practices (Muhengyo), Pure Practices (Jogyo), and Firmly Established Practices (Anryugyo). Including the shumidan altar, the ensemble rises to about 9 meters and was created by Buddhist sculptor Sohei Eri. It is enshrined in the Main Hall rebuilt in 1985, where visitors may also attend the daily morning service. Kuonji is one of Yamanashi’s major pilgrimage and sightseeing temples, making this an especially accessible and substantial Buddhist-image destination.
