Description

This wooden standing Yakushi Nyorai is preserved at Myooji Temple. The 43.3 cm image is made using single-block construction and was originally polychromed, with a full, weighty body characteristic of early single-block sculpture. Dating from the Heian period, it is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Fujikawa Town describes it as a cypress single-block carving showing features of the early Fujiwara period. Myooji is traditionally said to have been founded in 770 and remains a temple of prayer. Advance reservation is required to view the cultural property.
