Description

Enshrined as the secret principal image of Hogaiin Temple, this wooden seated Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu is made using joined-block construction and is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Yamanashi Prefecture. Temple tradition attributes the image to Gyoki, and it has long been venerated for prayers for children. Hogaiin is said to have been founded by Lake Motosu in 1362 and moved to its present site in 1597. The principal image is normally hidden and unveiled once a year. The temple holds its Kannon Festival around March 18 each year, so visitors should confirm the actual unveiling date in advance.
