Description

Preserved in the Treasure Museum of Seiunji Temple, this wooden seated portrait represents Zhongfeng Mingben, the Yuan-dynasty Zen master honored in Japan as Fuo Kokushi and teacher of Seiunji’s founder, Gakai Honjo, in China. An inscription inside the statue records that it was made in 1353 by Inko and Injun, Buddhist sculptors of the In school. Its narrowed eyes and gently closed mouth create a calm expression, while the deeply carved drapery gives the figure strength. An Important Cultural Property of Japan and a representative portrait sculpture of the Nanbokucho period, it can be viewed by advance reservation.
