DescriptionThis wooden seated Amida Nyorai is kept in the treasure repository at Rakanji Temple. Made from hinoki cypress using joined-block construction, it measures 70 cm in seated height and retains evidence that it was originally painted. An inscription on the base shows that it was created in 1423 as an image of Shaka Nyorai. During restoration in 1510, the Buddhist sculptor Iyo Hogen is thought to have altered the hand gesture, resulting in its present form as Amida Nyorai. A valuable dated image from the Muromachi period and a Yamanashi Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property, it requires advance contact with Kai City and scheduling for close viewing.
