DescriptionThe Wooden Five Hundred Rakan Statues are kept in a repository at Rakanji Temple. A total of 154 figures survive today; most are standing figures carved from hinoki cypress using single-block construction and range from about 36 to 81 cm in height. Although much of the original surface has flaked away, traces of coloring over a white ground remain. Every figure differs markedly in posture and expression, creating an unusually varied group. Inscriptions on the bases of some statues include the year 1424, confirming an early Muromachi-period date. The group is a Yamanashi Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property. Close viewing requires advance contact with Kai City and scheduling.
