DescriptionMore than one hundred Kannon stone statues are scattered across the grounds of Kaiganji Temple. They are said to have been carved over many years by Moriya Teiji (1765–1832), a stone sculptor from Takato in Nagano, at the request of the monk Tokei. Set amid the natural surroundings of this mountain temple, the figures have weathered wind and snow and are now covered in moss, each with a different expression that can be viewed at close range while walking through the grounds. Hokuto City also introduces the site as “Kaiganji Temple and its stone statues,” making it a place where visitors encounter Buddhist images within an active setting of prayer.
