DescriptionThese wooden standing figures of Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu are enshrined in Daizenji Temple’s National Treasure Yakushido Hall. They are attributed to the Kamakura-period Buddhist sculptor Renkei and were made from hinoki cypress using joined-block construction with crystal eyes. The two figures are distinguished by well-balanced, taut bodies, a full sense of volume beneath thin garments, and gently rounded faces. Designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan, they can be viewed during regular temple hours together with the Twelve Divine Generals in the same hall.
