Description

This wooden Amida Nyorai and two attendant figures were formerly the principal images of Ganjoji Temple. The triad consists of Amida Nyorai flanked by Kannon Bosatsu and Seishi Bosatsu and is dated to the late Heian to early Kamakura period. Temple tradition holds that it was commissioned by Takeda Nobuyoshi and made by Buddhist sculptors of the Jocho lineage from Kyoto’s Shichijo area. The bodies, pedestals, and halos of all three figures preserve their original form. Designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1939, the triad may be viewed by advance reservation.
