Description

This wooden standing Fudo Myoo is enshrined in the Treasure Repository at Hokoji Temple. Made from hinoki cypress using single-block construction with interior hollowing, it stands 148.4 cm tall. The left hand holds a lasso and the right a sword, while a slight twist of the hips conveys power. At the same time, its flowing drapery and calm dignity within the wrathful expression are distinctive. An Important Cultural Property of Japan, it is thought to have been made locally in the late Heian period around the time Hokoji was founded. It can normally be viewed with a guide.
