Description

This wooden seated Dainichi Nyorai is preserved at Hokoji Temple. Made from hinoki cypress using joined-block construction and measuring 95.4 cm in height, it represents the Diamond Realm Dainichi Nyorai with the Wisdom Fist mudra. Its flowing drapery and full-bodied form preserve the characteristics of the En school in the late 12th century. Designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, it is considered to date from around the period when Hokoji was founded. The temple accepts visitors every day to view its principal image and cultural properties, accompanied by a guide.
