Description

Myokozan Hokkeji Temple in Matsumae preserves the Ganman Nichiren Daibosatsu statue. According to the official Nichiren Shu website, it is traditionally said to have been created in 1331 by Nichizo Shonin and Daikaku Sojo, and is regarded as the second-oldest surviving image of Nichiren Shonin in Japan after the founder image at Ikegami Honmonji. Designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Hokkaido, the painted wooden figure depicts Nichiren preaching, holding a shaku in his right hand and a sutra scroll in his left. It was installed at Hokkeji in 1886. The temple is a designated Nichiren Shu historic site and is introduced as open from 9:00 to 17:00 with free admission.
