Description

Kannonzan Shokoin Temple in Noboribetsu Onsen enshrines an authentic Sho Kannon Bosatsu carved by Enku. Designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Noboribetsu City, it is regarded as a work from Enku’s prolific middle period. After the local Enku Kannon was lost in a 1911 forest fire, local historian Shuji Ishikawa obtained this statue from Arako Kannonji in Nagoya in 1957; it was enshrined at Shokoin in 1965. The official Jodo-shu temple directory describes Shokoin as a temple open to the public and highlights this Enku image as one of its defining treasures. It is distinct from the temple’s group of Kannon statues by Takamura Toun.
