DescriptionKushiro Ichinomiya Itsukushima Shrine preserves a Yakushi Nyorai carved by Enku. Designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Hokkaido, the seated image measures about 43 cm including its pedestal. The inscription on the back of the pedestal reads “Kusuri no Take Gongen,” and the figure is traditionally identified as a seated Yakushi Nyorai holding a medicine jar. It was once one of a group of images enshrined in a cave at Rebunge on the coast of Uchiura Bay and is said to have been transferred to Kushiro by Matsuda Denjuro in 1799. The statue is normally not on public view, but the shrine displays it once each year on September 9 for the Choyo Festival, offering a rare opportunity to see an original Enku image in Hokkaido.
