Description

Near an observation point overlooking Noboribetsu Jigokudani stands a Kannon Bosatsu carved by Enku. It is believed to have been made in 1666, when Enku traveled through southern Hokkaido carving Buddhist images with a hatchet, and is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Noboribetsu City. The statue disappeared during a forest fire in 1911 and was later found badly charred. It is now enshrined overlooking Jigokudani. The official Noboribetsu tourism association lists Natazukuri Kannon as a sightseeing spot with free access, making it an unusually easy place to worship an original Enku image while visiting one of Hokkaido’s best-known destinations.
