DescriptionEnshrined in the Main Hall of Kikoin, the oldest temple in Iwanai, this wooden Great Amida Nyorai stands 6.8 meters tall. The fifth head priest, Nomura, initiated the Great Buddha project in 1918, and with support from temple followers the image was completed and consecrated in 1921. Covered entirely in gold leaf, it is introduced by the temple, the Hokkaido Shiribeshi General Subprefectural Bureau, and Iwanai’s official tourism portal as the largest wooden Great Buddha north of Tokyo. When the 1954 Great Iwanai Fire destroyed most of the town, the temple escaped the flames. In 1969 the statue became Iwanai Town’s first designated Tangible Cultural Property. It remains viewable in the Main Hall today.
