Description

Enshrined in the Main Hall of Kongoji Temple in Esashi, this Koyasu Jizo Bosatsu was carved by the itinerant ascetic sculptor Mokujiki Gyodo in 1779 and is designated a Cultural Property of Esashi Town. The Hokkaido Board of Education describes it as an image preserved as an object of popular devotion for more than two centuries. Esashi Town tourism information introduces it as one of the Mokujiki statues created during his stay in the area, and traditions of prayer for children and safe childbirth continue today. The Main Hall can be viewed for a fee from 12:00 to 17:00.
