DescriptionThis Sho Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined in the Kannon Hall of Shomyoji, a historic temple in Hakodate. The temple describes it as a fine work from the Muromachi period and records that it was once kept and worshipped at the home of northern-fisheries entrepreneur Sanemichi Yagi. When his house escaped the Great Hakodate Fire of 1934, Yagi attributed this to the Kannon’s protection and left instructions for a Kannon Hall to be rebuilt; the present hall was completed in 1937. A Kannon service is still held on the 18th of every month, and the statue can be worshipped during regular viewing hours.
