DescriptionThis Sho Kannon Bosatsu was carved by the Edo-period monk Enku during his visit to Hokkaido in 1666 and is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Hokkaido. It measures 56.7 cm including the base. Date City highlights the vigorous adze-cut carving of the base together with the elongated eyes and gently upturned mouth that express Enku’s distinctive style. The statue can be viewed at the Usu Zenkoji Treasure Museum by advance reservation, although exhibits rotate for conservation.
