DescriptionHill of the Buddha is a worship space designed by architect Tadao Ando around the 13.5 m, 1,500-ton stone Great Buddha that had already stood as a symbol of Makomanai Takino Cemetery. Opened to the public in 2016, its defining landscape covers the statue with a hill so that only the head is visible from outside. Visitors pass a water garden and an approximately 40 m tunnel before looking up at the full Buddha beneath a large opening to the sky. It is open to general worship during the stated hours.
