DescriptionNarushima Mikumano Shrine’s Treasure Hall preserves a standing Tobatsu Bishamonten designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Once enshrined in a Bishamondo Hall, the statue is now protected in storage for conservation. Carved from a single zelkova trunk, it is said to be Japan’s largest statue of its kind, and its stance upon the hands of the earth goddess conveys the powerful atmosphere of syncretic Buddhist and Shinto protection in Tohoku. Behind the approachable shrine grounds known for crying sumo, an older dignity of guardian faith remains alive.
