DescriptionThe treasure hall of Narushima Mikumano Shrine houses an Important Cultural Property standing Tobatsu Bishamonten measuring 4.73 meters. Carved from a single zelkova trunk, it is celebrated as Japan’s largest single-block wooden image of this deity. Bishamonten stands imposingly on the open palms of the earth goddess Jiten'nyo and is accompanied by the two attendant demons Niranba and Biranba. Traditionally associated with Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and the protection of Japan’s northern frontier, the colossal figure preserves a powerful expression of the region’s intertwined Buddhist and Shinto faith.
