DescriptionKokyuji Temple preserves a pair of wooden standing Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu designated Treasures of Nagano Prefecture. An inscription inside the statues records their consecration in 1317, placing them at the end of the Kamakura period. Azumino City traditionally attributes them to Myokai, a Buddhist sculptor associated with Zenkoji. Formerly enshrined in the Main Hall, they are now kept in the kuri, or temple living quarters. Their securely documented date makes them especially valuable examples of medieval Buddhist sculpture. Azumino City opens them to the public on the third Sunday of each month; visitors must apply to the city’s Cultural Properties Protection Section at least one week before the viewing date.
