Description

The principal image of Fukumanji Temple’s Ruri Hall is a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Dating to the late Heian period, it is 147 cm high, made of katsura wood in joined-block construction, and left with a plain wood surface. Its full cheeks, long narrow eyes, and commanding physique give it a powerful presence; Omi Village introduces it as one of the largest Yakushi images in eastern Japan. Ruri Hall also enshrines four other nationally designated Important Cultural Property statues: Nikko Bosatsu, Gakko Bosatsu, Bishamonten, and Fudo Myoo. Viewing the Important Cultural Properties normally requires advance contact, while Ruri Hall is opened to the public for the spring service on May 3 each year, and the principal image may also be viewed during the New Year’s Eve temple visit.
