DescriptionEnshrined in Enma Hall in front of Tenkyuji Temple’s Main Hall, this monumental statue of Enma Daio stands about 5 meters high. Nagano’s official tourism site describes its head as wooden and its body as plaster, while the Hachijuni Culture Foundation lists it as “Japan’s largest statue of Enma Daio.” Its wide-open eyes and stern expression create a powerful presence that resonates with the temple’s long history of memorializing those killed in the Battles of Kawanakajima. Enma Hall is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Tenkyuji is open daily from 8:30 to 17:00, with a general admission fee of ¥200 shared with the Kawanakajima Battle Memorial Museum.
