DescriptionThe Maedachi Honzon was made in the Kamakura period as a substitute for Zenkoji’s permanently hidden principal image, the Amida Triad Sharing One Halo, and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The distinctive Zenkoji triad places Amida Nyorai in the center, Kannon Bosatsu to the viewer’s right, and Seishi Bosatsu to the left, all before a single shared halo. Normally kept in the temple treasury, the image is moved to the Main Hall only for the once-in-seven-years Gokaicho, when visitors can see it. The next unveiling runs for 77 days from April 4 to June 19, 2027, with the Amida image connected to the Eko-bashira pillar in front of the hall by the sacred “Zen no Tsuna” cord.
