DescriptionKanshoin Temple preserves a bronze pensive Bodhisattva designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database dates it to the Asuka period, while Matsukawa Village describes it as dating from around the 7th–8th century and introduces it as the oldest Buddhist image in Nagano Prefecture and one of the region’s rare gilt-bronze Buddhist statues. This small bronze image bears a gentle, compassionate smile and was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1982. Viewing is by advance application to the Matsukawa Village Board of Education, normally at least 20 days before the desired date. Since April 2026, admission is ¥500 per person.
