DescriptionThe principal image of Chishikiji Temple’s Omido Hall is a wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Dating from the late Heian period, the statue is 306 cm high and carved from a single block of keyaki (zelkova) wood with an unpainted finish. Chikuma City describes it as the only Eleven-Faced Kannon in Shinshu carved from a single block of zelkova. Omido Hall itself is also an Important Cultural Property, dating to the late Muromachi period, and the more-than-three-meter Kannon stands within its thatched-roof interior. Regular viewing requires an advance reservation, with special openings held during annual festivals and other occasions.
