DescriptionThe principal image of the Main Hall at Jorakuji, the head temple of Kitamuki Kannon, is Myokansacchi Amida Nyorai, regarded as one of the Five Wisdom Tathagatas. Unusually for an Amida Nyorai, the image wears a jeweled crown, and the temple introduces it as a rare form of Amida found in Japan. Jorakuji was established in 825, when Kitamuki Kannon Hall was founded, as one of the three temples known as the Sanrakuji, and it later flourished as a center of Tendai Buddhist learning during the Kamakura period. The Main Hall has a thatched roof, and its coffered ceiling preserves colors from the time of its construction. The temple is open year-round from 9:00 to 16:00, and the principal image can be worshipped with a ¥100 admission fee.
