DescriptionTsubosaka-dera, founded according to tradition in 703, is the sixth temple of the Saigoku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. Its main hall enshrines the Eleven-Headed, Thousand-Armed Kannon, long revered as the Kannon of the Eyes and the focus of prayers for recovery from eye disease. The devotion became widely known through the story later dramatized as Tsubosaka Reigenki. Together with the open mountain landscape and the large stone Buddhist images donated from India, the gentle principal image creates a bright, welcoming place of healing prayer.
