DescriptionTaima-dera’s Kondō, the temple’s original main hall, enshrines the National Treasure seated Miroku Buddha, or Maitreya, made in 681. Formed in clay, then covered with cloth, lacquer, and gold leaf, it is regarded as Japan’s oldest surviving clay Buddhist statue. Important Cultural Property figures of the Four Heavenly Kings stand around it as guardians. Although Taima-dera later became renowned for the Taima Mandala and Pure Land devotion, this ancient Miroku preserves the faith and artistic world of the temple’s founding period.
