DescriptionThis is the principal image of the Kannon Hall, which stands on elevated ground within Tenshoji Temple. Carved from a single piece of katsura wood, the statue is attributed to the early Kamakura period based on its slightly elongated face, gentle features and softly modeled form. It is flanked by wooden standing statues of Jikokuten and Tamonten, also thought to date from the early Kamakura period; all three are designated Cultural Properties of Niigata Prefecture. The two guardian deities are shown in armored wrathful form with carefully carved details, creating a striking contrast with the calm Kannon. Advance contact is required to view the Kannon Hall, and it cannot be viewed during the snowy season.
