Description

Echigo Nanaura Kannon is an 8-meter bronze standing Kannon Bosatsu overlooking the Sea of Japan along the Echigo Nanaura Seaside Line. The figure appears to watch over both calm seas and the rough winter coast and is revered for prayers connected with maritime rescue, repose for those lost at sea, household safety, traffic safety, business prosperity, memorial rites for fish, and mizuko memorials. As a large outdoor image it can be worshipped freely, and an annual festival is held in mid-June. Its striking union with the coastal landscape makes it a distinctive symbol of Buddhist faith along the Sea of Japan.
