DescriptionA monumental stone Fudo Myoo stands beyond the corridor in the grounds of Fukoji. According to the temple, tradition holds that it is the largest stone Buddhist image in Japan and that it was carved in the early Meiji period by a stonemason named Tomihachiro from the former Muikamachi area. The large wrathful figure has a striking presence and can be worshipped freely along the normal route through the temple grounds. Nearby is a large hollowed stone basin known as the ugai-bachi. Together with the images in Bishamondo and the treasure hall, it is one of Fukoji’s major works of Buddhist sculpture.
