DescriptionA pair of wooden Kongo Rikishi statues, Agyo and Ungyo, stands on either side of Rengebuji's Nio Gate. Both are carved from zelkova. The Agyo figure uses an older technique in which the head and torso are carved from a single block and split from the back, while the Ungyo figure is made from two front-and-back sections joined together, a more typical Kamakura-period method. Their restrained, somewhat formalized expression suggests a date in the first half of the 14th century. They are designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Niigata Prefecture and are associated with a period of expansion at Rengebuji. Visitors can worship the pair through the gate from the temple grounds, which are free to enter.
