DescriptionShowa Hall houses more than 220 Buddhist statues, centered on its enormous principal image, the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu known as Sado Daikannon. Erected in 1970 through the vow of Yamaguchi Ryukai, the 24th priest of Ishina Seisuiji, it was carved from a single piece of 2,200-year-old cypress and rises more than 7 m (2 jo 8 shaku) high. Official tourism information says it is reputed to be the world’s largest wooden Buddhist statue. Numerous other images, including Wisdom Kings, fill the hall, making it a destination worth visiting specifically for Buddhist sculpture. Advance contact is required; admission is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary-school children.
