DescriptionAnjuji houses a complete group of 33 Kannon images by Mokujiki Shonin known as the “Hibo Thirty-Three Kannon” and has long been known as a temple where visitors can encounter a large group of Mokujiki statues. Mokujiki Shonin was an itinerant monk of the late Edo period who traveled throughout Japan carving numerous wooden Buddhist images; his rounded forms and gentle smiles are widely known as “smiling Buddhas.” The opportunity to view 33 Kannon together makes Anjuji a particularly worthwhile destination for those interested in Mokujiki sculpture. Advance reservation with the temple is required.
