DescriptionKamimaejima Konpira-do preserves a group of 36 Mokujiki statues carved in 1804, when Mokujiki Shonin was 87: the Chichibu Thirty-Four Kannon, a self-portrait statue and Konpira Daigongen. Nagaoka City describes it as the largest surviving group of Mokujiki images in Japan. Local tradition says children once used the statues as flotation aids when playing in the river in summer, as sleds in winter and even for minding younger children; as a result, many of the figures are heavily worn. The group vividly shows how Mokujiki’s images were woven into everyday local life and was designated a Cultural Property of Nagaoka City in 1983. Advance contact is required for viewing.
