DescriptionJuo-do in Kashiwazaki’s Biwajima area preserves Buddhist images carved by Mokujiki Shonin in 1804–1805, including Enma Daio, the Ten Kings and Binzuru Sonja. Twelve figures were originally made; eight can now be viewed inside the hall, while the remaining four are displayed at the Kashiwazaki City Museum. Their rounded forms and deep smiles exemplify the “smiling Buddhas” of Mokujiki’s later years, while Enma Daio has a particularly powerful presence. Viewing requires advance reservation through the Kashiwazaki Tourist Association and is available from 9:00 to 17:00 from April through November; the hall is closed from December through March.
