DescriptionThe Main Hall of Gochi Kokubunji houses five statues of the Five Wisdom Tathagatas—Dainichi Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai, Hosho Nyorai, Amida Nyorai and Shaka Nyorai—arranged in a row; each is listed as 4 shaku 5 sun (about 136 cm) high. The temple carries on the tradition of a provincial Kokubunji founded in the Tenpyo era to pray for the peace and prosperity of the nation, although its location and scale have changed over time. The interior of the Main Hall is open for worship from 9:00 to 12:00 from April through November, while the grounds and exterior of the hall can be visited year-round. The complete group of five Wisdom Tathagatas makes this one of Joetsu’s notable Buddhist pilgrimage spots.
