DescriptionOkadera, formally Ryūgaiji, is the seventh temple of the Saigoku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage and is revered as Japan’s first temple for protection from misfortune. Its main hall enshrines an Important Cultural Property seated Nyoirin Kannon measuring about 4.58 meters, the largest clay Buddhist statue in Japan. The two-armed form preserves an early iconography that predates the more familiar six-armed esoteric image. In the hills of Asuka, its monumental scale is tempered by a composed expression that quietly receives prayers for protection and peace.
