DescriptionFive hundred stone Rakan figures are scattered throughout the grounds of Josenji. In 1988, the temple and stone sculptor Kurata Tatsuhiko began the project, which continued for more than thirty years and reached completion in April 2022. Kanagawa Prefecture's official tourism information notes that a Five Hundred Rakan group carved by a single sculptor is extremely unusual. Every figure differs in pose and expression, and visitors can view them closely while walking among the flowers, trees and bamboo of the temple grounds. Although modern rather than ancient images, the ensemble has exceptional unity and individuality and makes the statues themselves a compelling reason to visit.
