DescriptionA pair of Great Tengu and Small Tengu statues guard the Kekkai Gate at Daiyuzan Saijoji. The gate was built in 1897, and the Tengu statues were donated by the Tokyo Godaiko association in 1936. The temple's official guide identifies the Small Tengu on the left and the Great Tengu on the right, marking the area beyond the gate as the sacred domain of Doryoson. Temple tradition says that Doryo, a disciple of the founder Ryoan Emyo, helped build Saijoji and, after his master's death, transformed into a tengu and vowed to protect the temple forever. These powerful outdoor guardian figures are among the temple's most distinctive sacred images and can be viewed closely.
