DescriptionGyokuhoji's main hall is densely filled with 526 wooden Rakan figures and related images, ranging from 24 to 60 cm in height. In 1730, Chitetsu of the former Tako village began raising donations to create the Five Hundred Rakan and completed 170 figures over seven years. After his death, his younger brother Shincho carried on the project and completed the group in 1757. The statues were damaged by major earthquakes in the mid-19th century and repaired in 1860–1861. Today the ensemble is designated a Tangible Folk Cultural Property by Odawara City. It is a rare large group of Rakan in Kanagawa, and visitors can closely view the individual expressions and poses inside the main hall.
