DescriptionSeiunji's principal image, known as Takimi Kannon, is a wooden seated Kannon Bosatsu in a hanka posture with one knee raised. Made in China during the Southern Song dynasty, it is designated a Important Cultural Property. The statue is constructed from joined pieces of hard Chinese cherry wood, with glass-like inlaid eyes and molded paste used for the hair and jeweled ornaments—features characteristic of Chinese sculpture. It was originally the principal image of nearby Entsuji and was transferred to Seiunji after that temple disappeared, becoming Seiunji's principal image in the late Edo period. It is regarded as one of the representative surviving examples of Southern Song Buddhist sculpture in Japan and can be viewed by advance telephone reservation.
