DescriptionHundreds of Rakan figures are scattered through the grounds of Choanji and the wooded hill behind the main hall. The Five Hundred Rakan represent disciples of Shakyamuni who attained the state of arhat through Buddhist practice. According to the Hakone Tourist Association, installation of the statues began in 1985 and continues today. Each figure has a different pose and expression reflecting a wide range of human emotions, giving the group a distinctly modern and approachable character. Visitors can walk through bamboo groves and woodland while viewing many of the Rakan at close range, making the statues themselves a major reason to visit the temple.
