DescriptionRyuhoji preserves a 195 cm wooden standing Thousand-Armed Kannon designated a Important Cultural Property. Carved from a single block of kaya wood, it has an unusual Kiyomizudera-style form in which one pair of secondary arms is raised above the head to support a small manifestation of Amida Nyorai on the palms. Ebina City notes that the carving and drapery show Heian-period characteristics, while the realistic facial treatment and crystal-inlaid eyes reflect features of the Kamakura period. Normally kept as a secret image in the repository behind the Kannon Hall, it is unveiled only twice each year, on Jan 1 and Mar 17.
