DescriptionTwo Benzaiten images are enshrined in the Hoanden Hall beside Hetsunomiya at Enoshima Shrine. The Kamakura-period Happi Benzaiten, designated a Important Cultural Property, has eight arms holding weapons and ritual implements in a powerful form. Myoon Benzaiten, popularly known as the Naked Benzaiten, is a nude figure holding a biwa and is designated an Important Cultural Property by Fujisawa City. Devotion to Enoshima Benzaiten flourished in the Edo period, making the island a major pilgrimage destination. Both images can still be viewed together in the Hoanden, preserving Enoshima's history of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism through two of the island's best-known sacred sculptures.
