DescriptionThe principal images of Oyama-dera are an iron Fudo Myoo and two attendant boys. Tradition holds that Gangyo Shonin, who revived the temple, cast them in 1274 during the Kamakura period. The central seated Fudo Myoo is 97.9 cm high, while the standing Kongara and Seitaka attendants are each about 96 cm. All three are cast in iron and fitted with inlaid crystal eyes—a rare combination in Japanese Buddhist sculpture—and are designated a Important Cultural Property. They were central objects of worship in the Edo-period pilgrimage known as Oyama-mairi and are still unveiled regularly on the 8th, 18th and 28th of each month.
