Description

This seated Amida Nyorai is the central figure of the Amida triad by Unkei preserved at Jorakuji. It is one of five images created by Unkei in 1189, commissioned by Wada Yoshimori and his wife of the Ono clan; the Amida triad, Fudo Myoo and Bishamonten are all designated National Important Cultural Properties. The Amida triad is made of joined cypress wood and uses carved eyes, and Kanagawa Prefecture describes it as the only surviving complete Amida triad by Unkei in Japan. Regular viewing resumed in September 2025 after renovation of the repository, and the image can now be viewed and worshipped at close range in the viewing hall without advance reservation.
